Lose That Weight in 2008!

HealthTip
of the Week…

Top Hospitals Embrace Conservative, More Natural Approaches
Elite centers like the Mayo Clinic, Duke University Medical Center, and the University of California-San Francisco now offer many different conservative and more natural approaches. All 18 hospitals on U.S. News's most recent "America's Best Hospitals" Honor Roll provide alternative approaches of some type. Is your hospital one of them?

A recent US News and World Report article (in the January 5, 2008 edition) suggested 5 urgent reasons why people should work at normalizing their weight this year. While many make weight loss a new year’s resolution, few will take the steps necessary to turn the resolution into reality. This lack of action or discipline to follow through is often due to not realizing a strong enough purpose to do the things that need to be done to accomplish one’s goals.
Here are 5 good reasons to take action:
Cancer Prevention: Being lean protects you against six cancers that have been linked to extra fat—esophageal, breast, pancreatic, colorectal, endometrial, and kidney—and possibly gallbladder.
Insulin Resistance: When your body's tissues become resistant to insulin, you become more vulnerable to high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.
Fat promotes fat: As fat stores in the body grow, we tend to eat more and move less contributing to more fat.
More Fat=More Inflammation: High body fat causes the blood vessels to become inflamed and lays the groundwork for atherosclerosis.
More Problems: Fat deposits start getting packed away in places like your liver, muscles, and wrapped around vital organs. In the liver, fat deposits can cause rampant inflammation and scarring that can lead to liver failure.

The Bottom Line…The Bottom Line…The Bottom Line…

It is clear to everyone that losing weight and being lean are always in one’s best health interest. And, we have all encountered people who tell us that losing weight will be easy. Isn’t it interesting that, many times, those people have either never tried or never had to try. But, since some have been successful, we know that it can be done. Please do speak with us about how we may be able to help you and stay tuned…next week, we will offer you some healthy suggestions.
